DOT Fines Delta, AirTran for false advertising.
ANYBODY REMEMBER MY RANT AFTER TRYING TO BOOK TICKETS FOR VEGAS?
Well it looks like Delta just got bitch slapped, and Karma did the slapping in the form of a $40,000 fine (pocket change to the struggling company I'm sure...) And the best part? This all has to do with their online ticket purchase process. The very thing I was complaining about; however, more directly about failure to disclose that the prices did not include certain taxes and fees ALL THE TIME. Other times there was a link that was supposed to explain this but it failed to do so in a manner in which the consumer could reasonably understand the lingo.
AirTran, on the other hand, has been sending out things stating that you can travel for as low as $39 one way. When you log into the site, there are NO $39 seats available. The most specific and recently investigated incident of this was the Beat The Blizzard email sent to A+ rewards customers (of which I was member). The email gave the above fare so long as you traveled before March 26th which is coincidentally the date I was looking at for Vegas!
Personally, I say screw the fine, anyone who tried to book a flight for the dates that fall in the time frame the US DOT investigated should get some sort of refund. Especially customers flying Airtran who got charged no less than $30 more per seat purchased.
What are your thoughts? Are the fines too steep or not steep enough? Should customers be compensated in some way?
